Artificial intelligence arrives in Sri Lanka with the launch of CogCom.
Log into LinkedIn, turn on the TV or open up a newspaper and it won’t take long for you to come across a feature on artificial intelligence. There’s no doubt it’s one of the most talked-about technologies of today – but there’s one company doing more than just fuelling the hype, and it launched here in Sri Lanka last Thursday. Introducing the Colombo Centre for Cognitive Computing (CogCom).
Walk through the doors of CogCom, and you’d be forgiven for believing you were at one of Google’s notoriously creative offices. With airy, glass-walled meeting rooms and collaborative working areas filled with natural-wood swings, colourful beanbags and fake grass, the space more than resembles a San Francisco start-up. But the foliage isn’t the only thing that’s artificial here.
CogCom’s talented team of AI specialists are the lucky techies who get to enjoy this environment, building apps that help businesses worldwide to automate mundane tasks and improve the customer experience. These apps are powered by smart machines, which can respond to questions asked in natural language, instantly – from anywhere at any time.
On the evening of 2nd March, however, computers and code were put aside for the night as the centre officially opened.
Early in the evening, guests started gathering at the entrance, before being warmly welcomed into the building by traditional Sri Lankan dancers. Asiri Fernando, General Manager of CogCom, delivered a captivating introductory speech. This was followed by an address from Chris Sykes: CEO and Head of AI & Robotics at Volume, CogCom’s sister company based in the UK, who had flown in for the occasion alongside Gemma Hood, Chief People Officer.
Chris proudly cut the ribbon, and guests were able to experience CogCom fully, immersing themselves in the company’s cocktail party – complete with music, canapés, drinks and food served from a live-cooking station. Hoppers, kottu and desserts were prepared and enjoyed… but the real sweet takeaway was the vision that CogCom shared with attendees.
Asiri said: “We will continue to forge new relationships through innovation, determination and a focus on delivering excellence in all we do”. For us, that means we can expect exciting new technologies to emerge from the organisation, which strives to grow and offer more and more cognitive services to some of the biggest brands around the globe. For CogCom, that means the hard work starts now… and what a way to kick it off!
